The Medical Billing and Coding Certificate prepares students for entry-level employment in medical coding, medical billing, and related healthcare revenue cycle positions. Students develop skills in medical terminology, healthcare documentation, diagnostic and procedural coding, and healthcare reimbursement.
The curriculum emphasizes accurate code selection, application of coding guidelines, regulatory compliance, and ethical practices in healthcare documentation and reimbursement.
The 37-credit-hour certificate is designed to be completed in three semesters and prepares graduates to pursue the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) credential offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Most certificate coursework also applies toward Kaskaskia College's Health Information Technology degree.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of Medical Records Specialists is projected to grow approximately 8% nationally from 2025 to 2035. The national median annual wage for this occupation was $51,140 in May 2025.
