The Literacy Coordinator will be responsible for the development of instructional services and the overall recruitment and training of volunteer tutors to offer literacy services to adult learners and families throughout the Kaskaskia College district
The Literacy Coordinator reports directly to the Director of Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) who reports to the Vice President of Instructional Services, who reports to the President. To accomplish the work of the position, the coordinator will work closely with other personnel in the AEL Department.
Qualifications for Position
Required: • Bachelor degree in education or social service. • Experience in working with underprivileged, undereducated, disadvantaged and minority individuals. • Excellent communication and human relation skills. • Grant writing skills. • Fund-raising experience. • Proficiency organizing and planning • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. • Valid Illinois Driver’s License • Ability to travel to various locations in the district using a personal vehicle • Proficiency using Microsoft Office products including; Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Preferred: • Masters degree in education • Three to five years experience in a literacy or adult education program
• Coordinate recruiting and training of volunteer tutors and literacy instructors throughout the district. • Coordinate and implement tutor training sessions for each county in the district. • Coordinate the scheduling of tutoring sessions for tutors and learners at designated sites. • Coordinate, monitor, and oversee Family Literacy programs within the school system. • Coordinate, monitor, and oversee education efforts with the Centralia Library System. • Collaborate with personnel of penal system in developing and maintaining literacy programs at correctional facilities located in the college district. • Oversee all tutoring services offered in Adult Basic Education, English Second Language, and GED programs hosted by KC-AEL Department. • Assist in writing grants to support the literacy services offered by the KC-AEL Department. • Manage “The Reading Link” Library. • Oversee the selection of instructional materials and books utilized by tutors and instructors to enhance customer literacy skills. • Monitor, collect, and report data associated with literacy services of KC-AEL Department. • Solicit in-kind contributions to support program from businesses, community, civic, and social agencies
Assist in the development, distribution, and presentation of marketing correspondence that explains the services offered by Kaskaskia College’s Adult Education and Literacy Department. • Assist in the identification and recruitment of students eligible for services provided by the Adult Education and Literacy Program, and ESL students. • Attend staff development activities for professional development. • Assist, with the retention efforts of adult learners by the Adult Education and Literacy Department. • Assist, as needed, in the organization of meetings appropriate for the support of adult education and literacy department activities, including but not limited to council meetings, staff meetings, and recognition ceremonies. • Coordinate media relations with the Kaskaskia College Public Relations Department. • Serve on the Kaskaskia College Area Literacy Council and Kaskaskia College Area Planning Council. • Attend workshops as required to update skills as required for the position. • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Adult Education and Literacy.
The coordinator will supervise tutors, literacy educators, staff, and student workers associated with literacy programs and as assigned by the Director of Adult Education and Literacy.
Consultation with supervisor is expected on a regular basis.

The Literacy Coordinator will have frequent contact with students, college staff, parents, and the general public.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Duties to be performed in a standard office environment with frequent distractions and interruptions. Position requires the transporting of books and supplies, which may weigh up to fifty pounds. Also requires the ability to travel to locations within the service area to fulfill responsibilities. This position requires the candidate to have a valid Illinois driver’s license.

Continuation of position is contingent upon continued grant funding.
The position is full-time grant funded and is eligible for fringe benefits. Pay rate is depending on prior experience and education with salary range of $37,000-40,000 annually. Hours may vary from week to week and flexible schedule required, including daytime and evening hours.
Positions require Bachelor’s degree in education or social work, along with a demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the community college mission and philosophy, strong understanding of and commitment to teamwork, excellent oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated proficiency in organizing and planning.
