Kaskaskia College Reading Link Volunteer Linda Summers Receives Statewide “Spotlight on Achievement” Award

Kaskaskia College Reading Link volunteer Linda Summers, of Nashville, was honored recently with the Spotlight on Achievement Award at the Illinois State Library in Springfield. The annual award recognizes outstanding tutors and learners from adult literacy programs across Illinois.

Summers has volunteered with KC Reading Link for nearly 15 years, currently tutoring English as a Second Language alongside her husband, Will, at the Nashville Methodist Church. The two also tutored at the Nashville Education Center for several years. Each Wednesday evening, they work with a group of Spanish-speaking adults, focusing on vocabulary, conversation, and practical applications to help students build their English skills and confidence.

"Linda is one of those rare volunteers who never looks for recognition, but earns it every single week, said Justine Milcevic, KC Reading Link Coordinator. She's prepared, dependable, and gives her students her full attention. They know she believes in them, and that makes all the difference."

"Linda's dedication shows what can happen when someone commits their time and heart to others," said Tommy Henegar, KC Director of Adult Education. "Her consistency and compassion have helped her students not just improve their English but also feel more confident in their everyday lives. She is a tremendous asset to our program and our community."

KC Reading Link is part of Kaskaskia College's Adult Education Department and offers free tutoring in reading, writing, and essential skills to adults throughout the KC district. Volunteers receive training and ongoing support to help learners reach their goals.
