A Call for Unity and Leadership in Challenging Times, an op-ed from KC President George Evans
Dear KC Students and Employees,
In recent days, our nation has once again witnessed senseless violence and deeply troubling expressions of political hatred and disgusting, random acts of violence. These moments can leave us feeling shaken, angry, or even fearful of our future. As members of the Kaskaskia College family, we must pause to reflect on what truly unites us, not just as students, faculty, and staff, but as Americans.
Our country was built on the belief that diverse ideas and perspectives make us stronger. Civil discourse and healthy debate are the cornerstones of democracy, allowing us to grow and learn from one another. Yet with that freedom comes an equally important responsibility: to show restraint, empathy, and understanding, even when we passionately disagree.
At Kaskaskia College, we have a unique opportunity and responsibility to rise above the divisions we see around us. I challenge each group, both students and employees, to serve as catalysts for unity for your peers, your coworkers, your neighbors, and most importantly, those whom you do not know or are yet to meet. Be the example that others look up to model the values of compassion, courage, and respect. Let your actions and words reflect the very best of what it means to be part of this community and this country. That said, it's ok to be angry, lost, and hurt; it's standard human nature to have these feelings. I am no different and deal with them daily. But don't let those feelings win; it's easier said than done, I know. However, we all have one life to live on this planet, one life only. You can choose to live angry, lost, or in sadness, or you can choose to live your life to the fullest, with zeal, passion for your beliefs, and a caring nature for your fellow mankind. I choose the second option, and I hope you do too.
Unity does not mean uniformity, nor does it require us to think the same way. Instead, it calls on us to listen before speaking, to seek common ground before casting judgment, and to see the humanity in one another above all else.
Together, we can be a beacon of hope and civility not just for our campus, but for our families, our communities, and our nation.
Thank you for being part of the KC family and for your commitment to building a future rooted in empathy, respect, and shared purpose. I know that our students have the capacity to change the world, and I am excited to watch them continue to blossom and am committed to removing any barrier to their ascension to success. To our employees: you are changing the world every day through your commitment to these very students. I'm so thankful to work with such great people. I am convinced you're not here for the paycheck, your daily actions are validation that you are here for a higher purpose than just compensation.
In closing, in a dark world, be the light. Be the smile a stranger sees. Be the person you wish to be. You control that no one else. Serve as the catalyst or bridge. Be better - we owe it to ourselves and to our future society.
With hope and determination,
George Evans
