A local student of Kaskaskia College has received international publication. Lauren Stengel, of Greenville, will have an article appearing in Areo Magazine, a UK-based publication that focuses on opinion and analysis of current affairs.

Stengel’s article, “Why We Need Fantasy Literature,” explores the reasons behind literary critics’ disapproval of the fantasy genre and argues for its importance and legitimacy as literature. Stengel was inspired by her love of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, and she originally wrote the article for a class at Kaskaskia College.

“Last year, after turning in my final writing assignment for English 102, my professor, Josh Woods, was impressed and suggested I try to get it published,” says Stengel.

What started as a hard road, with initial rejections from two magazines, quickly turned to success as Areo Magazine responded in 24 hours and offered to buy and publish the article.

“This is a rare and impressive accomplishment for any writer, even more so for a current student,” says KC Professor Josh Woods. “Stengel has real talent, and this is just the beginning for her career.”

“Everyone at KC has been overwhelmingly supportive of me, and their support is something I will never forget. I’m so proud to be a student here,” says Stengel.

Stengel is currently President of the Writers Club at Kaskaskia College, and last year she won the local Paul Simon Student Essay Contest and was named runner-up at the state level by The Illinois Community College Trustees Association.
