Function:
The Residential & Commercial Electricity Lab Assistant is responsible for supporting the safety functions of the CNEL (Construction, Network, and Electrical Lab) environment. This includes helping with lab preparation, preventative and general maintenance of equipment, and ensuring a safe and organized working environment for students. The Lab Assistant also aids in preparing materials, managing equipment inventory, and maintaining industry standards within the lab setting.

Organizational Relationship:
This position reports to the Assistant Professor of Residential & Commercial Electricity, who reports to the Dean of Workforce Engagement and Industrial Careers, who reports to the Vice President of Instructional Services, who reports to the President of the College. The position will communicate regularly and work directly with the Dean of Workforce Engagement & Industrial Careers as well as faculty and staff at Kaskaskia College.

Qualifications:
Required:

  • Successful completion of at least one year (30 credit hours) of residential and commercial electricity coursework, including NFPA 70E Electrical Safety; possession of either OSHA 10-Hour Construction or OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification

  • Demonstrated competency in coursework with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher

  • Ability to follow safety standards and standard operating procedures

  • Willingness to take direction and work independently after assignment

  • Physical ability to lift 50 lbs., climb, bend, and stand for extended period

  • Commitment to the mission and values of Kaskaskia College

  • Familiarity with electrical tools, systems, and codes (e.g., NEC)

  • Understanding of electrical theory, blueprint reading, and troubleshooting

  • Ability to use hand and power tools such as drills, strippers, and meter

  • Ability to interpret basic electrical schematics and diagrams

  • Effective verbal communication and teamwork skills

  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills

Essential Functions:

  • Assist students during lab activities to ensure safety

  • Set up, organize, and prepare lab equipment and materials for instruction

  • Perform preventative and routine maintenance on lab tools and electrical equipment

  • Monitor and inventory lab supplies and tools; assist with ordering and restocking

  • Assist in the cutting and preparation of materials such as conduit and wiring

  • Provide demonstrations on safe tool and equipment usage as directed by faculty

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of lab areas

  • Report equipment issues, damages, or safety concerns to the CNEL faculty

  • Support the development and organization of instructional materials

  • Assist with monitoring of adherence to safety protocols and ensure proper use of PPE by students; report violations to CNEL faculty immediately

  • Assist with student project guidance

Supervisory Responsibility:
This position has no supervisory responsibility.

Supervisory Controls:
Employee is required to work independently with a minimum amount of supervision. Consultation as necessary is available with the Dean/Vice President.

Guidelines:
Position is expected to follow all Kaskaskia College policies and procedures, along with local, state, and federal laws and regulations. Position is also expected to adhere to and promote College core values of compassion, honesty, respect, fairness, and responsibility.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Work primarily takes place in an instructional lab/shop environment

  • Exposure to tools, machinery, fumes, and loud noise

  • Requires standing for long periods, lifting and moving equipment, and use of PPE

  • Must understand and consistently adhere to lab safety procedures and practices. The lab assistant is responsible for reporting any safety or maintenance issues to the CNEL faculty and Dean of Workforce Engagement and Industrial Careers immediately.
