Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for SHIELD Illinois
What is SHIELD Illinois?
SHIELD Illinois is a University of Illinois program whose goal is to share the innovative, saliva-based COVID-19 test developed at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with the rest of the state. The process requires individuals to simply deposit a small amount of saliva in a vial, which usually takes less than five minutes, and provides results within approximately 24-72 hours.
When and where is testing?
Testing will be done weekly on Tuesday and Wednesday from 7:30 am-10:30 am in the Lifelong Learning Center (LLC). Testing is done on a walk-in basis, so NO APPOINTMENT is necessary.
What do I need to bring?
You will need a photo ID to test (KC ID, Driver’s License, State ID).
What should I do prior to coming for testing?
Prior to coming for testing you must complete the Authorization to Share COVID Information at https://form.jotform.com/212725706700046 and complete registration for the SHIELD Patient Portal at https://shieldillinoisportal.pointnclick.com/login_login.aspx (see attached instructions).
An Agency Code will be required when registering for the SHIELD Patient Portal
• Agency Code for Students is ujuf89d3-stu.
• Agency Code for Employees is ujuf89d3-emp.
Please remember your username and password as you will need this information again to access your test results. This is a one-time registration process so you will not need to complete this each time you test.
What should I NOT do prior to testing?
Individuals should not eat, drink (including water), brush their teeth, chew gum, smoke, vape, or use tobacco products within 60 minutes of providing a saliva sample. Doing any of these things within 60 minutes of providing a sample could produce an inconclusive result.
How does testing work?
When you arrive at the testing site, the testing team will verify your photo ID and that you have completed your consent form/registered in the patient portal. You will then be given a test tube and funnel and move to a marked spot on the floor. Next, you will remove the tube lid and place the funnel on top of the tube. At this point, you may lower your mask and dribble saliva through the funnel into the tube until you collect 2mL of saliva (not bubbles). When you have provided an adequate sample, remove the funnel from the tube and throw it away in the designated waste container. You will then close the lid tightly on the tube and take your sealed tube to the collection station to be verified.
What should I do if I have difficulty providing an adequate sample volume?
There are several things you can try if you are having trouble providing a sample. You may try gently rubbing the outside of your cheeks, making chewing motions with your mouth, smelling, or imagining sour foods such as lemons, or thinking about your own favorite food.
How do I receive my results?
Test results will be posted in your SHIELD Patient Portal at https://shieldillinoisportal.pointnclick.com/login_login.aspx under “View My Lab Results” approximately two-three days after testing.
Who is my information shared with?
Under the CARES Act, all test results are shared with the Illinois Department of Public Health. The Kaskaskia College COVID Team will also have access to your results and if you test positive you will receive a phone call alerting you not to come to campus.
Who can I contact for help with setting up an account, resetting my password, or accessing results?
Please contact SHIELD Illinois at 217-265-6059.
