The Creative Writing Workshop: Stories and Novels is a two-day program focused on helping participants explore, develop, and improve their own fiction writing.

During the workshop, we will cover the following aspects of writing stories and novels:

  • Tricks of the trade for structuring short stories
  • How to plan out and complete a novel
  • Strategies for generating ideas and beating writer's block
  • How to develop characters, plots, and storyworlds
  • How to handle fiction genres (fantasy, science fiction, horror, young adult, etc.)
  • Basics of the business side of writing (publishing, copyright, rookie mistakes, etc.)
  • And more

Participants will have the opportunity to learn from other writers, share their own experience, practice some new ideas, and even share some of their own writing.

The workshop will be taught by Josh Woods, and will include a session with special guest author Fred Venturini.

Josh Woods is an author, editor, professor, and podcaster. He loves monsters, myth, storytelling, comedy, combat, and crafts. He is the author of the book of stories O Monstrous World! (Press 53, 2019) and the novel The Black Palace (Amazon KDP, 2018). He has also edited three anthologies of fiction and has published genre and literary short stories in numerous journals, magazines, and collections, in addition to having published creative non-fiction and craft essays. His podcast, The Monster Professor, explores the role of monsters in literature, myth, film, folklore, and pop-culture. His awards include Outstanding Full-Time Faculty Member of the Year, Press 53 Open Awards for Genre Fiction, and nominations for the Pushcart Prize, Best of the Net, and the Shirley Jackson Awards, among others. Fred Venturini has eleven scars from eleven separate incidents, the most interesting of which is the time he was set on fire. For the others, just ask. His short fiction has been featured in the Booked Anthology, Noir at the Bar 2, and Chuck Palahniuk's BURNT TONGUES anthology. He is the acclaimed author of THE HEART DOES NOT GROW BACK and the forthcoming THE ESCAPE OF LIGHT (Turner, 2019). On the basketball court, he is a three-point specialist and defensive liability.
