Reading Tips
Tip 1: Establish a purpose for reading
Decide if you are reading for specific or general understanding of the
information. For general understanding, ask yourself questions, highlight
the text, make notes in the margin and take chapter notes. Consider how this
chapter ties in with class lectures and discussions. If you are reading for
specific information, you might read only part of the chapter. How you read will
change based upon your purpose for reading.
Tip 2: Review what you have read
Think about what you have just read. Don't immediately close the book and go on to
something else. Look over any chapter notes you have written, and re-write
anything that is unclear. Review the notes you made in the margin. Think about
how this chapter relates to other chapters you have already read and what the
instructor is discussing in class.
