Kaskaskia College Celebrates National CTE Month - Career and Technical Education Programs Prepare Students for CAREERS

Career and Technical Education (CTE) prepares individuals for high-skill, in-demand employment that furthers Illinois’ global competitiveness. Last year, roughly two-thirds (62.2%) of all Illinois community college graduates earned a CTE degree or certificate. CTE programs offer flexible scheduling, work-based learning, and stackable credentials that provide a pathway from education to employment not only for recent high school graduates, but also for returning adults, veterans, and incumbent workers. Success in CTE programming is amplified by academic support services, work-based learning opportunities, and business engagement. CTE’s reach in Illinois’ workforce continues to be expansive; currently, there are over 4,300 different CTE program offerings across the community college system.

Kaskaskia College joins with community colleges throughout the state to celebrate Career and Technical Education Month.  Kaskaskia College continues to reinforce to the community and the KC district the urgent issue regarding the critical skills gap regarding the lack of trained labor in the vocational trades.  At present, the average worker in the vocational trades is 56 years old and approaching retirement.  The major problem area manufacturers and industrial trades such as construction, HVAC and Welding companies are facing is the diminished pool of replacement skilled labor.  This is a very serious issue, not only for the KC district, it is an issue for Illinois and the United States as whole.  The KC district and other communities thrive when economic development is strong.  In order to have a thriving economic development sector, a community must first and foremost be able to provide area business and industry with trained labor.  No employer will relocate their business or start a new business in a region if a community cannot support their need for trained labor.  We must continue to promote to our youth, as well as those seeking career changes that there are very good, above average paying careers right here in our district.  Many manufacturers and construction companies in the KC district will be or are currently hiring. These are great paying CAREERS not jobs but CAREERS.  An additional bonus is having a community college with an incredibly experienced vocational training staff that can prepare students for a great CAREER in these trades, at a very affordable cost.  The average degree at KC will costs a student between $9,000-$11,000.  Many of our graduates are hitting the ground running with careers in manufacturing and the industrial trades making above $40,000.  That is great return on your educational investment.

Interim Kaskaskia College President and Dean of Career and Technical Education George Evans states: “Our motto at Kaskaskia College is “Success Starts Here”.  We stand by this statement with fierce conviction, because we see the results of our end product:  a graduate who is placed in his/her CAREER field, with minimum debt and a great starting wage.”

“Anyone interested in getting into a career that pays well and is in high demand should look into CTE programs. CTE programs are working with business and industry leaders around the state to fill their needs for skilled employees,” said ICCB executive director Dr. Karen Hunter Anderson.

In recognition of Career and Technical Education Month, Kaskaskia College will be hosting an open house at its Crisp Technology Center on February 23rd, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Please come visit our vocational trade center and we will be delighted to give you a tour of our state of the art facilities and display some of our modern technology in our newly renovated labs and classrooms.
