Mimi Polczynski Travels to Trinidad For Two-Day Radiography Seminar

12/07/2017

In July, Mimi Polczynski, M.S.Ed.,R.T.(R)(M)(CT), Radiology Program Director at Kaskaskia College, had the opportunity to visit Suriname to participate in a two-day seminar for local radiographers, medical physicists, and radiologists concerning Quality Assurance in the Radiology Profession.  That trip was very successful and Mimi was given another opportunity to travel to Trinidad this past November.

Each trip was in collaboration with Pan America Health Organization (PAHO)/World Health Organization (WHO) to increase knowledge and understanding by providing crucial information on how to develop quality assurance programs, leadership skills and critical thinking in order to use radiology in an appropriate and effective manner.  In Suriname Mimi worked along with Dawn Sturk, M.S. R.T.(R), retired program director from Detroit, Michigan and Kayiba Medlen, MPH, R.T.(R)(M) PAHO/WHO Radiological Health Program. In Trinidad, she worked with Dr. Kimberly Applegate, MD, MS, FACR Division Director of Pediatric Radiology from the University of Kentucky and again with Kayiba Medlen who is based out of Washington D.C.

In Trinidad, it was noted that there is a shortage of money for upgrading several aspects in the radiology department and one specific area was obtaining lead markers for all radiographers.  Markers are used to identify the individual taking the x-ray and the proper side of the patient being imaged.  Mimi volunteered to donate old markers that the KC radiology program is no longer using.  She is shipping 53 pair of markers to Trinidad.

“I have met wonderful people who have a great passion for radiology and worked with a wonderful group of professionals who I now call my friends!  There are always obstacles and difficult situations but I have learned a great deal and hopefully will get to travel to another country to promote continuing education opportunities.”  Four years ago Mimi also traveled to Guyana to assist in implementing a Bachelor Degree Program at the University of Guyana.  These trips have been very rewarding and educational in helping other radiographers improve their skills and obtain continuing education in the imaging profession
