Dental Assisting

Career & Technical Certificate
Dental Assisting prepares the student to assist the dentist during patient treatment procedures. Classroom, lab, and clinical instruction provide students with a broad background in all aspects of dentistry. During the last semester clinical internship is provided by area dental offices under the guidance of dentists and assistants in the communities throughout the district.

Goals of the Dental Assisting Program:
Access-We will provide access to quality dental assisting education through the use of scientific evidence based instruction and technology that meets current industry standards.

2. Student Success-We will promote success for all dental assisting students through outstanding teaching by faculty who act as mentor and professional role models and who provide instruction methodology that prepares the student to successfully complete the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) to earn the title of Certified Dental Assistant (CDA).

3. Diversity-We will enrich the dental assisting student’s education experience by providing and promoting cultural awareness that acknowledges each individual’s worth and uniqueness and enhances effective interactions, communications and/or provision of care with all individuals or groups.

4. Cultivating Partnerships-We will create partnership that effectively link student with partnership that effectively link student with practicing oral and other health care professionals who will provide advising, mentoring, and enrichment experiences in preparation for employment upon graduation.

5. Community- We will serve as a key source to community by comprehensively preparing competent students who will participate in enrichment experience in the community, during externship rotations, and after gaining employment.

6. Ethics and Responsibility-We will prepare the student to practice ethically and responsibly as a Dental Assistant.

7. Continuous Improvement- We will develop faculty and student who continuously seek to enhance knowledge as life-long learners by seeking peer support in professional associations, fulfilling evident based continuing education and applying self-assessment.

Representative Job Titles
Those completing the program will receive a certificate of achievement and will be immediately eligible to sit for the Dental Assisting National Board. Successful candidates may use the title Certified Dental Assistant (CDA). Students will also be eligible to perform the following expanded functions upon successful completion of the Dental Assisting Program.
  • Coronal Polish
  • Place Dental Sealants
  • Monitor Nitrous Oxide
Each course in the program is designed to be an integral part of the whole program and does not stand alone as a means to receive Expanded Functions Certification. No student will receive a certification until all college and program requirements are successfully completed.
