Kaskaskia College student Zach Steevens recently received the Outstanding Student Award from the St. Louis Chapter of the American Welding Society.

“It’s a great honor to me,” said Zach Steevens. “As it shows that hard work really does pay off.”

Steevens was nominated by Mike Freed, territory manager of Cee Kay Supply, after seeing Steevens’ dedication and determination in KC Professor Cory Wellen’s welding courses. Steevens chose KC to continue his education due to the outstanding reputation of the KC Welding Program that he first heard about during high school. He is from Salem, IL, and is a first-generation college student.

“Zach is an unbelievable student and genuinely good human being,” said Wellen. “I’m extremely proud for him to receive this honor and can’t wait to see what’s next for him.”

Steevens is graduating from Kaskaskia College in May 2022 with an associate’s degree in Welding Technology. Since the beginning of his participation in the program, he has rarely missed class and spent hundreds of hours in the welding lab to perfect his work. Zach saved money to purchase his own welding generator just to have equipment to practice with on the weekends. His hard work has not gone unnoticed, and he was recently accepted into the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers.

With a great work ethic and a drive to help others, Zach routinely helped other classmates with their welding techniques. Professor Wellen states that Zach is always willing to volunteer to help others and grow the welding industry. In the past year, Zach has volunteered to work booths for the college, American Welding Society, and The Boy Scouts of America at various events.

“I’m positive that Zach will be successful in the welding industry,” said Wellen. “He dreams of getting his own welding rig, and I’m sure he will accomplish it.”
