Kaskaskia College Leads Broadband Adoption Initiative; Survey

January 15, 2021

As Chairman of the Education Committee for the Leadership Council of Southwestern Illinois, Kaskaskia College President George Evans is spearheading the broadband adoption initiative for the region.

“It’s important that Kaskaskia College remains involved with the need to increase connectivity in our area,” said Evans. “As Kaskaskia College went remote due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was eye-opening on the high amount of connectivity issues we had with students and staff. It’s not conducive to try to learn or work in your car with a mobile hotspot.”

The Leadership Council Education Committee seeks to build long-term reliability and consistency in internet connectivity and broadband access for remote workers and e-learning for students in the region to enable further economic development and educational enhancement activities.

The committee focuses on access, use, and adoption initiatives to improve broadband connectivity by addressing inadequate and unreliable broadband services, identifying where higher speed connectivity is needed, and examining technology skills and affordability gaps.

“This is a bipartisan issue,” continued Evans. “Our local hospitals, healthcare offices, schools, and city governments have all struggled to provide the same level of services via telehealth and e-learning due to connectivity infrastructure issues, and perhaps more surprising, the inability to pay for internet.

Evans has begun a speaking tour throughout the southwest Illinois region to educate city governments, school boards, and civic organizations about the broadband adoption committee’s efforts and available grant opportunities.
