Family, friends, instructors, and college officials all joined together on Tuesday December 17 at the Kaskaskia College Vandalia Campus to congratulate the December 2013 class of Practical Nurses. It was a very memorable moment in the lives of these students who have worked so hard to achieve this goal.
Pledge of Allegiance was recited by Linda Beck with the faculty and guests in attendance.
Janet Garretson, Dean of Nursing, welcomed students and their families and introduced the faculty and guests in attendance: Dr. James Underwood, President of KC; Dr. Gregory Labyak, Vice-President of Instructional Services; Ms. Nancy Kinsey, Vice-President of Administrative Services; Kimberly Storm, MSN, RN, Vandalia Campus LPN Instructor; and Mary Schulze, Director of the Vandalia Campus. Dean Garretson said that she is very proud of the continued success of the LPN program and the importance of making this opportunity available to students in the Northern part of the KC District.
President Underwood then shared his high regard and deep respect for the nursing profession and how he appreciated the service and compassion they give to each of their patients. He encouraged each student to continue their education and hopes they realize that, in order to truly be successful in their chosen profession, they will need to be life-long learners. He then introduced Mr. John W. Hawley, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Hawley congratulated the LPN program graduates and stressed that he hoped that, along with all the knowledge and experience the students took with them from their time at KC, they also would also take with them the core values that Kaskaskia College stands for: Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Compassion, and Fairness.
Student Tess Slusher shared a “Special Thanks” on behalf of the students. She conveyed thanks to family members, husbands, parents, and children; as well as friends, teachers and tutors. She expressed that they could never have made it through the last 11 months without the love, assistance, and support of those around them.
Kim Storm, LPN instructor, awarded two students with special recognition certificates. Linda Beck received the award for Outstanding Academic Performance and Adrienne Weischedel received the award for Outstanding Clinical Performance.
Student Samantha Evans shared a poem entitled “O The Places We Go” on behalf of the students. She conveyed thanks to family members; and what kind of journey they have been on. She expressed how wonderful the year has been at Kaskaskia College and what a wonderful journey they are about to start as a nurse.
After the pinning, family, friends, and guests enjoyed a video presentation produced by the students of pictures taken throughout the semester in their classroom and at various clinical locations. The ceremony ended with a benediction given by Mary Schultz and the nursing graduates reading of the Nurses’ Pledge. The students exited the dimly lit room carrying their lighted Florence Nightingale lamps. A reception with refreshments followed for the students, their families and friends in the lobby of the Simma-Kelly Building.
