Kaskaskia College to Offer Residential/Commercial Electrical Technician Program at Expanded Trenton Education Center

Kaskaskia College will be offering a Residential/Commercial Electrical Technician Program as the first site-specific course at the Trenton Education Center in the fall 2014 semester, pending Illinois Community College Board approval.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics, employment opportunities for residential/commercial wiring technicians are expected to grow at a rate of 23% nationally, which is faster than the average for all occupations.  Additionally, it is estimated that approximately 60 replacement technicians will be needed annually within the Kaskaskia College district, along with any new positions that are created.  The Illinois Department of Employment Security reports that experienced technicians within the College district have a mean annual wage of over $70,000.  Part of Kaskaskia College’s role in the district is to have a quick response to the needs of area employers and students for a well trained work force.

KC plans to offer a 2 year Associates of Applied Science degree in the field, with an option for a one-year certificate that will count toward the degree.

“The goal of the program is to mirror the first two years of apprentice training through local unions,” said George Evans, KC’s Dean of Career and Technical Education, who has spearheaded the project.  “It is our belief that our graduates will have a competitive edge when applying for union jobs.”

For more information on the Residential/Commercial Electrical Technician Program, please contact George Evans at 618-545-3030 or at gevans@kaskaskai.edu.

The Residential/Commercial Electrical Technician program will be offered only at the Trenton Education Center, which is currently undergoing an extensive renovation and expansion to increase it from 3,800 square feet to nearly 16,000 square feet, including a multi-purpose industrial lab area where instruction for the program will take place.  The expanded center is expected to re-open in March of 2014.

The expansion project is being paid for with a combination of private donations and extended bond funds.  The fundraising effort is within $50,000 of reaching its goal.  Parties interested in helping the College reach its goal through donations, pledges, or the purchase of an engraved paver that will make up part of the entrance to the building are encouraged to contact Suzanne Christ, Campaign Chair, at 618-545-3069 or by email at schrist@kaskaskia.edu.
