Herschel and Betty Thomas of Breese have longed been supporters of higher education through the established of several scholarships at Kaskaskia College. The couple continue their support with the establishment of two new scholarships through KC.
The Thomas’ have pledged $10,000 for the establishment of the Herschel Thomas U.S. Veterans Scholarship, which will award $1,000 annually to assist veterans with their pursuit of a higher education. A World War II veteran who earned the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and a special citation from Belgium during his service in the European Theater, Thomas understands there is a direct path from education to success and that link is often broken when young people have to step forward to serve their country. The recipient’s account will be credited for the $1,000 which may be expended, $500 per semester, in a manner determined by the individual as most needed and appropriate.
This scholarship will be awarded to a veteran who displays patriotism, positive attitude and pride in America. Applicants may be enrolled full or part time.
The Thomas’s have also established a two year scholarship to assist a student who will be entering KC’s nursing program. The scholarship was established to help KC student Rebecca Ferguson achieve her goal in nursing and can be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies or credit in the KC cafeteria.
