Linda Berry of Centralia was one of ten recipients of the
Illinois Press association’s Spotlight Award.
The award is given annually to ten tutors and ten learners in a ceremony
held in Springfield, Illinois.
Mrs. Berry is a volunteer tutor for “The Reading Link”
program at Kaskaskia College. She began
helping others learn to read in English after her retirement from Wal-Mart in
2008. “I love books,” Mrs. Berry
said. “My house id filled with
bookshelves, and I can’t imagine a life without reading, especially for an
adult. So, I decided to do my part.”
Over the years, Mrs. Berry has tutored a number of students,
including one from China and one from Vietnam.
As a Spotlight Award winner, Mrs. Berry received a check in
the amount of $200 for “The Reading Link” program and a number of books, one of
which was autographed by Illinois Secretary of State Jessi White, who presented
the award, and a plaque commemorating the event.
“The Reading Link” is Kaskaskia College's Adult Literacy
Program. Services are provided at no cost to the learner. For more information on “The Reading Link” at
