Prior to his appointment to the music department in 2002, Professor Jourdan was the conductor of the Centralia Philharmonic Orchestra for 6 years. In addition, he was a public school band director at Vandalia High School and Sandoval Jr./Sr. High School respectively where his ensembles consistently won competitions and received superior ratings.
While teaching in the public schools, Professor Jourdan's marching, concert and jazz bands consistently won competitions and received superior ratings at organization contests. He has also taught chorus, and general classroom music programs. His success in the public schools led him into the college teaching ranks where he has won the Kaskaskia College Student Congress Outstanding Professor Award in the 2004-2005 academic year.
His performance background and experience include orchestral work, concert band work, jazz and big bands (bass, trombone, guitar, vocal), various brass quintets (tuba), and progressive rock groups (bass, guitar, keyboards and vocals). Professor Jourdan's responsibilities at Kaskaskia College include teaching music major courses, general education courses, conducting the Kaskaskia College concert, jazz, and pep-bands along with directing the student jazz ensembles. He was also the co-organizer for the first Merry TUBA Christmas in the Centralia area in 2006.
Jourdan is very active as a clinician and adjudicator sharing his passion for music throughout the southern Illinois region. He also serves as a frequent guest conductor for honor and festival bands. An active performer, Jourdan keeps busy performing with various ensembles in Southern Illinois.
Professor Jourdan holds a Bachelorís degree in Music Education from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and a Masterís degree in Music Education from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. He studied conducting with Dr. Charles Menghini of VanderCook, Edward Benyas and Michael Hanes of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. In addition, he studied composition with Dr. Frank Stemper from SIUC and Bill Camphouse, formerly of Kaskaskia College. He is a member of the Illinois Music Educatorís Association (IMEA), Music Educators National Conference (MENC), College Band Directors Association (CBDA), and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE).
Jourdan is a commissioned composer and arranger with over 50 works to his credit. His most recent commision is for the 2014 WMEA All-State Symphonic Choir and will be premiered in Yakima, Washington in February 2014.
In addition to his position at Kaskaskia College, Professor Jourdan is the owner of Four Winds Music Publishing, LLC.
