Leaf: simple, broad ovate to ovate, 2 to 4 ½ in. long, 1 to 3 in. wide, smooth margin, dark green above, grayish-green beneath.  
Flower: fragrant, borne in large terminal panicles, very showy  
Fruit: 4 to 6 inch long cluster of capsules. Fruit Color - Smooth, leathery, light tan to brown.  
Bark: Bark is dark gray-brown to purplish, quite smooth and sometimes lustrous, with prominent horizontal lenticels, resembling Prunus bark.
